Originally developed by Iranian architect Nader Khalili and inspired by ancient Middle Eastern mud brick architecture, these shelters are built using just sandbags and barbed wire. Long sandbags are filled with earth and stacked in circles, layer by layer, with barbed wire placed between each row for added strength-making the structure tough enough to withstand earthquakes.⁠

As the walls rise, they curve inward to form a cone-shaped roof, creating a durable and weather-resistant home. These shelters are incredibly affordable, require no heavy machinery or special training, and can be constructed quickly by anyone in the community.⁠

Not only are Sandbag Shelters eco-friendly-with thick earth walls that keep interiors cool during the day and warm at night-but they’ve also been approved by the UN for emergency housing, used to shelter refugees, and even received building permits in California thanks to CalEarth, the non-profit founded by Khalili.⁠
